Case Study: The Beat Behind the Exhibit

Reel Images and The American Jazz Museum, located in the heart of Kansas City’s Historic 18th & Vine District, set out to create an interactive exhibit titled Jazz Talk: Defining Kansas City Jazz—a bold, contemporary experience to honor Kansas City’s jazz legacy while engaging a new generation.

They enlisted Messenger Ink to guide the brand direction, visual language, and user experience across every touchpoint—physical and digital.

Crafting the Vibe

Messenger Ink led the creative direction for Jazz Talk, shaping its identity from the ground up. We developed the core theme—“Defining Kansas City Jazz: Past, Present, Future”—and brought it to life across messaging, exhibit design, print materials, digital platforms, and a custom mobile app. From immersive touchscreen stations and layered visuals to a bold microsite and swipeable app experience, every detail reflected a fusion of jazz history and modern storytelling. We also advised the American Jazz Museum on outreach and audience engagement, helping create an exhibit that was as dynamic and soulful as the music itself.

Immersive Stages

  • For the Jazz Talk exhibit, Messenger Ink collaborated closely with exhibit fabricators to create an environment that was as visually compelling as it was educational. The centerpiece of the experience included immersive touchscreen stations, allowing visitors to explore Kansas City’s jazz legacy through interactive storytelling, archival photos, music samples, and guided narratives. Each digital touchpoint was designed to feel intuitive and engaging—inviting users to tap, swipe, and discover at their own pace.

Beyond the screens, the physical space was brought to life with environmental graphics that transformed walls, panels, and entryways into vibrant canvases. We layered historic jazz photography with bold paintbrush textures and flat vector illustrations to evoke movement, rhythm, and emotion—echoing the improvisational spirit of jazz itself. Every design element—from custom color palettes to curated typography—was chosen to balance the vintage soul of jazz with a modern visual flair.

Together, the digital and physical elements created a cohesive atmosphere where history didn’t just hang on the walls—it lived, breathed, and played in real time.

When do they work well, and when do they on us and finally, when do we actually need how can we avoid them.
